Under EU Regulation 2037/2000, the use of HCFCs such as R22 is no longer permitted in new products from 1 January 2010. From this date onwards, these refrigerants will only be allowed in reclaimed form or, under specific conditions, in recycled form. From 2015, a general ban will apply to systems that use these refrigerants.

Given the fact that R22 levels in existing industrial plant and food retailing remain high, there is a risk of supply shortfalls when this refrigerant is no longer available in its virgin form. It is highly unlikely that the R22 demand after 2010 for the still operating R22 equipments can be covered by reclaimed R22. We therefore recommend that customers switch to using alternative refrigerants without delay.

Depending on the age, remaining service life, condition and operating costs of the refrigeration system, it may mean taking the system out of service completely. Converting systems to alternative refrigerants can generally be done in parallel with operations. Or invest in a new refrigeration system with an HFC or natural refrigerant, for example carbon dioxide (CO₂).
